Problems with mental health are not exclusive to certain types of people; anyone can experience periods of emotional difficulty at some point in their life. Asking for help can feel like a big step, and it can be hard to know who to turn to.

Anyone Can Experience Periods Of Emotional Difficulty

Counselling can help you work through these difficult times.

Counselling

How Can Counselling Help?

Counselling will give you the experience of being listened to without judgment, and will enable you to express yourself without feeling that someone is trying to ‘fix’ you. In this relationship, your feelings will be acknowledged, and this in itself will give you new perspective on your situation, and enable you to start to see things more clearly.

Counselling is an opportunity for you to reflect on whatever it is that you want to bring, whether this is past or present experience, or even worries about the future.

What Can Counselling Help?

Counselling can help with many issues. It is sometimes difficult to give a name to how we are feeling, and some of the words associated with mental health are not always that clear. You may also be experiencing many different symptoms.

The most common reason to seek help is due to feelings of anxiety and/or depression or ‘low mood’. Some of the symptoms associated with these feelings are as follows.

Depression or Low Mood

  • Feeling unenthusiastic about things that would usually lift you

  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness and despair

  • Struggling to find any motivation

  • Sleeping more than usual, and not wanting to get up in the morning

  • Feeling irritable, and short-tempered with others

  • Withdrawing from usual social activities and preferring to be alone

Anxiety

  • Feeling on edge and unrelaxed

  • Excessive worrying about things that have happened, or might happen

  • Struggling to get to sleep and/or waking up in the night and not being able to get back to sleep

  • Feeling physically tense which could cause headaches or stomach upsets

  • Feelings of panic which include shortness of breath, racing heart, a rushing sensation and a sense of everything feeling unreal

Why Do I Feel Like This?

There could be many different reasons why you are experiencing symptoms. Among these could be issues relating to:

  • Relationship break-down

  • Big life changes or decisions

  • Family

  • Work stress

  • Confidence

  • Racism or cultural difference

  • Finances

  • Isolation

  • Health

  • Bereavement

  • Sexuality and gender

  • Past trauma

  • Abuse (physical, sexual or emotional)

It could also be that you don’t know why you are feeling this way.
